Health
It is advisable to bring mosquito repellent, sunscreen and always drink bottled water. There is no agreement with the Dominican social security system, so healthcare is private. If you need regular medication, bring it from Spain, along with basic medicines, as they can be costly locally.
Electricity
Most hotels offer 220-volt power, though the national grid is 110 volts. Bring a flat-pin plug adaptor.
Climate
The Dominican Republic has a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging between 27°C and 30°C, meaning beach weather can be enjoyed all year round.
Shopping
Local crafts are widely available, as well as amber and larimar jewellery, cigars, chocolate, coffee, and bottles of mamajuana – a deep red liqueur made with rum, red wine and honey soaked in tree bark and herbs.
Fun Facts
Originally called “El Jovero”, the town was renamed in honour of Dominican general Eugenio Miches, a hero of the Restoration War. Before European colonisation, the area was inhabited by the Taíno people, who left behind petroglyphs, pottery fragments and other archaeological remains. Local folklore also tells the legend of the Ciguapa – a mysterious woman with backwards feet who appears in the woods and has been part of oral tradition for generations. Thanks to sustainable tourism and the absence of mass development, Miches has preserved its beaches, mangroves and mountains. Visiting supports the conservation of one of the country’s purest and most authentic destinations.
