Stone Town Tour

Stone Town Tour

Description

Walking tour of this extraordinary city, known as Stone Town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. A cosmopolitan archipelago and a key stop on ancient trade routes, it has welcomed Indians, Chinese, Omanis, Phoenicians, Sumerians, Persians, Assyrians, Portuguese, Egyptians, Dutch, and the British — all blending their heritage with African tradition.

The urban layout and architecture are marked by Arab influence, with its most iconic feature being the tall houses with central courtyards. Inside the city, you can find over 49 mosques, 2 Christian churches, and 4 Hindu temples — a testament to the area's rich cultural fusion.

Our expert guides will accompany you to discover the famous intricately carved wooden doors, which reveal the resident's origin, religion, and social status. We will visit the former slave market, the cathedral, the central market, the old Sultan’s palace, the House of Wonders (currently under restoration), the fort, and Freddy Mercury’s house, among other historical landmarks.
